NEUROPLASTICITY
Neurons that fire together, wire together…
NEUROPLASTICITY is the brain’s natural ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural pathways and connections throughout life, from childhood to old age.
Neuroplasticity allows the nerve cells (neurons) in the brain to adjust their activity in response to new situations or changes in their environment.
Brain reorganization occurs by forming new neural pathways to bring about a needed function. This is put in place in the brain by mechanisms such as ‘axonal sprouting’, where undamaged axons grow new nerve endings to reconnect neurons whose links were severed, impaired, or not functioning at their best.
Neuroplasticity also means undamaged axons can also grow nerve endings to connect with other undamaged nerve cells – thus enhancing performance. This is achieved by stimulating the neurons through activity. By doing certain activities, the brain compensates by forming new communications and connections between intact neurons
By undertaking repeated, synchronized, goal directed exercises the brain can grow new neurons to create new neural pathways. ‘Where there was once cluttered and beaten up old pathways, there are now neurological super highways’.
